Des Constructions

Des Constructions, the first short film by Anthony Rousseau, is a 15-minute cinematic project about a man’s return to his hometown, where the buildings of his childhood are being demolished. The film weaves together themes such as the death of an unknown father, grief, and architecture.

I am very grateful to Anthony for trusting me with the composition and recording of the film’s original soundtrack, which was born from discussions with the visual artist and director. Very early on, we decided to use the cello as the central element of the soundtrack.

I chose to begin composing even before filming started, creating a score that could be recorded and reworked. The goal was to produce a flexible framework, capable of adapting to different narrative and visual possibilities. Des Constructions was therefore envisioned as a modular composition from the very beginning. From this material, numerous pieces or “short stories” could potentially be extracted. I settled on six “moments,” reworked to complement Anthony Rousseau’s images, which can be heard in the film (ranging from 38 seconds to 2 minutes 40). Additionally, I created a longer piece, presented here, lasting 13 minutes 30 and titled Des Constructions 222 to distinguish it.
